I recently received a very cool mix CD from </span></a>jasmineemily,
so here's my review (I'll use the style that Rachel did for her review). </span>
Brendan is one of the best
songwriters out there today and this is just further proof. While I don’t think
it matches anything from previous album ‘Lapalco’ (not much does), it’s still
really infectious with good lyrics.
One of the best
tracks from ‘Ether Song’, I reckon. The main reason I love Turin Brakes is that
Olly Knights’ vocals are so distinctive, and they’re fantastic lyricists too,
far more subtle than others in their field like Starsailor: “Have another drink
my son, enjoy another cigarette, ‘cos it’s time you realised you’re just an
average man”. Harsh but fair!
that reminds me of groovin’ to The Bees with a half-full tent of shroomed-up
maniacs at V Festival (everyone else was watching Muse – yawn). Like The
Bluetones’ song, it’s a perfect laid-back Summer track: “I have told you life’s
a worry and it’s true/You’re so serious so what is it with you?” Love it.
something I don’t like about the Zutons. This track isn’t as catchy as their
single and seems quite forgettable. They’re also too close to The Coral for my
… and here they are to show how the whole psychedelic Scouse-pop thing should
be done. The Coral are still fantastic and get better with each album.
My favourite Bloc
Party song apart from ‘Little Thoughts’ (why the hell wasn’t that on the
album?). Nonsense lyrics but the riff is so good it demands multiple playings.
I’ve heard this song so many times but it’s still exciting.
An odd choice I
think, ‘cos I don’t think this is a very good example of Ash’s substantial
talent. It’s a bit forgettable and the chorus doesn’t strike me in the same way
that ‘Girl From Mars’ or ‘Shining Light’’s did. It’s still pretty good, though.
Johnny Borrell’s finest
hour. Though I despise him as a person, there’s no denying how anthemic and
brilliant ‘Golden Touch’ is.
This is a solid cut from
Franz's album. An effectively simple verse structure with a classic Franz chorus.
Really looking forward to seeing of Franz’s new stuff compares to classics like
this. A good ending of a great CD!
