While the mixes are being made/distributed and reviewed I thought I would post something to the community. So how do most of you discover new music? Through the media, word of mouth, gigs? And what do people think of the music press? Generally I believe music magazines have interesting articles and are useful as buying guides but are taken far to seriously. I also think its ridiculous how magazines such as Q are mainly made up of lists such as the 100 guitar solos of all time.

I used to do it via music magazines, but now it's via the internet and Livejournal, I find communities such as sharemusic very useful.

Yeah I use the internet too, I usually use music message boards. But I also like discovering new bands on the radio. Thanks for mentioning the community. I may join it, looks interesting.

I guess I discover music / decide what to buy on the basis of -
What my mates recommend
Bands I've seen at gigs
Reviews I've read (Rocksound magazine being the best one for me)
Stuff I see on-line

I discover music largely by recommendations from friends or by channel hopping on the various music channels on Sky.

Also I have bought albums based on magazine hype, it sometimes works out but not always. Free CD's with magazines are generally helpful too.

The other source would be bands I've seen live (either support bands or bands that I have gone to see for the hell of it (such as the Murderdolls or Electric 6)).

When you say stuff online is that stuff you see on online shopping sites like Amazon or is it other sources like record company sites?

I usually find out about different bands via the internet, look at the "similar artists" for another artist that I really like. Teletext is also good - the void tells you about up and coming new bands which helped me find out about artists like Franz Ferdinand and the kaiser chiefs way before they were covered by the mainstream press.

Cool, I look for similar artists too. I like to see what bands my favourite artists are currently into. The Void used to do good live reviews Im not sure if they still do them.
